Monitoring that detects drift, degradation, bias emergence, or unexpected behaviors. Plus response procedures that are documented and practiced, not theoretical.
Evidence trails
Records that can be followed. Not just “we reviewed it.” More like: “Here’s the review artifact. Here’s the owner. Here’s the decision. Here’s the change log.”
Audit-ready governance is not a tool purchase. It’s an operating model. Tools can enforce governance. They can’t create it.
If you want governance that holds up under scrutiny, focus on four moves:
Establish clear ownership
Name the roles. Define decision rights. Make authority real.
Implement measurement that matches operational reality
Define a small set of metrics that prove control effectiveness (performance thresholds, fairness indicators where relevant, monitoring triggers, incident thresholds).
Standardize documentation
Create repeatable templates for risk assessments, approvals, exceptions, and monitoring results. Consistency is what makes evidence defensible.
Run internal reviews before anyone else does
Periodic reviews using external frameworks help you find gaps early, while you still control the narrative and the timeline.

Strong AI governance turns written intent into operational control:
Executive accountability for outcomes, not just policy approval
Cross-functional integration across legal, risk, engineering, and operations
Continuous improvement as standards evolve and systems change
Clear reporting that boards can repeat with confidence
